Clyburn Statement on Emergency War Funding Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after House passage of the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2008. The legislation consisted of three amendments: the first providing funding for the war; the second, conditions on the war funding; and the third, funding for domestic priorities, including veterans education assistance, Gulf Coast recovery funds and an unemployment benefit extension. A majority of Republicans voted “present” on the first amendment, defeating its passage.

House Approves Legislation to Lower Gas Prices

WASHINGTON, D.C. – "H.R. 6022 will lower prices at the gas pump by temporarily suspending the fill of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) until the end of the year. The SPR is 97 percent full, the highest level ever, with enough oil to meet our national security needs. Filling of the SPR takes thousands of barrels of oil off the market each day. A temporary suspension could reduce gas prices from 5 to 24 cents a gallon."

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Graduates were addressed by Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.), Majority Whip for the 110th Congress of the U.S. House of Representatives. The civil rights activist, politician and philanthropist, who has served the 16th District of South Carolina since 1993, is the second citizen of that state and the second black to be chosen for the third-ranking position in the House. Clyburn received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the event.

WASHINGTON, D.C. –“H.R. 5818 establishes a $15 billion loan and grant program for the purchase and rehabilitation of owner-vacated, foreclosed homes. Furthermore, H.R. 3221 will modernize the Federal Housing Authority, provide crucial liquidity to our mortgage markets and strengthen our housing regulatory procedures. The centerpiece of the legislation helps families at risk of foreclosure refinance into lower-cost government-insured mortgages they can manage. These measures, which have bipartisan support, will begin to repair our economy and restore confidence in our housing markets.
