Clyburn on the Passing of Stephanie Tubbs Jones
August 20, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C.— “Whether you were a presidential candidate, a colleague debating on the floor or a friend passing time, you wanted her on your team for her quick legal mind, tenacious debating skills, her infectious humor and that thousand watt smile.  My heart is heavy.  She was larger than life and we will all greatly miss the Gentlewoman from Cleveland.  My prayers are with her family, friends and staff.”

Louisiana Levee Cost-Share Extended
August 8, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today was pleased to see the President respond to calls from him and his congressional colleagues to extend the payment deadline for Louisiana’s share of levee construction.  Clyburn led a delegation of House members to the Gulf Coast from July 19-22, which called on the President to extend the time to 30 years for the state to repay $1.8 billion, its share of the hurricane protection.

Republican 'Drill Only' Plan Doesn't Bring Down Gas Prices
August 6, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C.—“Before we adjourned, Republicans blocked several bills that would have done something to address high gas prices in the near-term—drawing down oil from the nation’s own stockpile, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve; curbing speculation in the energy markets; expanding drilling in Alaska; and ‘Use it or Lose it,’ legislation requiring energy companies to use the 68 million acres of taxpayer-owned land for which they already have drilling permits or allow others to drill on them. Furthermore, they’ve stood against legislation to crack down on price gouging, invest in renewable energy, establish the first new vehicle efficiency standards in 32 years, and repeal taxpayer subsidies for major oil companies that are making record profits."

Clyburn's Halls of History
June 18, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC—Not too far back, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) had reproductions made of the official House portraits of three pioneering Members — Joseph Rainey (R-S.C.), Romualdo Pacheco (R-Calif.) and Jeannette Rankin (R-Mont.), respectively the first black, Hispanic and female Representatives — for the halls of his Capitol leadership suite.“Those are reminders to people we are all standing on someone’s shoulders here,” says Clyburn, only the second black to rise to the No. 3 House leadership position.

Floor Remarks

Clyburn Floor Remarks on the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Capital Financing Imrovement Act
November 13, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC— As a proud graduate of an HBCU, South Carolina State University, I understand the important role that HBCUs play in the development of our country.  It is essential that this Congressional body do all it can to support these institutions and the students that they serve. I requested the introduction of this bill, because many of the buildings and facilities at some of these fine colleges and universities are in deteriorating states.  This bill goes a long way towards making it possible for many of these schools to refurbish their infrastructure to better serve the needs of their faculties and student bodies.

Clyburn Floor Remarks on Second Chance Act
November 13, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC— If we are ever going to make progress in addressing the crime that is crippling our communities, we cannot give up on any human being.  Because it is not enough to say that we are just going to lock up every offender and throw away the key.  Such narrow-mindedness does nothing to prevent our vulnerable youth from being indefinitely trapped in our nation’s corrections system.

Clyburn Floor Remarks on Water Resources Development Act
November 6, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC—“The importance of this bill are highlighted throughout my District and this country. Part of my District has been labeled by some as the corridor of shame, communities bisected by interstate I-95.  This region of South Carolina has some of the more serious health problems to be found anywhere in this country.

Clyburn Floor Remarks on North Carolina Beach House Fire Resolution
November 6, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC—“America’s troops serve our country with honor and distinction.  The President disgraces their service by not adequately rewarding them for their heroic acts and brave deeds.  I urge this Administration to change course and join Congressional Democrats in supporting measures that properly acknowledge and compensate our veterans for the many sacrifices they make defending our freedoms.”

As the first African-American to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Congress since the 1890's, I fully appreciate and understand the vital importance of observing Black History Month.  And as a Member of the Congressional Leadership, I will continue to work with my colleagues in advancing a legislative agenda that benefits all people of all colors.”

Clyburn Statement on 50th Anniversary of Little Rock Nine
September 25, 2007

Washington, D.C. –“As a civil rights activist in South Carolina and organizer of one of the first sit-ins in that state, the Little Rock Nine serve as able examples for us of what can be achieved when individuals take principled stands for fairness and equality.  Their struggle and selfless sacrifices demonstrate that insurmountable social ills can be defeated by altruistic acts and enduring deeds of valor.”

Hope for South Carolina's Future
April 10, 2007

We've been too busy in recent years erecting barriers among us, which are harmful to the long-range best interests of our state and country.  It's time we come together as South Carolinians and Americans.

Clyburn Kicks Off Black History Month With Democratic Radio Address
February 3, 2007

“In the first 100 hours of the legislative session, we ushered through broad reform measures and a widely bipartisan legislative package that honored the promises we made during the campaign season.  It was not a Black agenda or Hispanic agenda.  It was not an Asian agenda or a middle-class agenda.  Yet it was all those agendas because it was an American agenda.

Introduction of Judge Matthew J. Perry, Jr. Into the South Carolina Hall of Fame
January 8, 2007

Matthew Perry lived the inspirational words given to us by Maya Angelou.  Her beautiful imagery of a tapestry of equal threads is a reminder of the Constitution’s connecting thread that “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”  Whether arguing before the court or adjudicating from the bench, Matthew Perry weaves the common thread of equality.  Not a bad legacy for a young black boy, whose value early in life was seen as less than.  Today he is one of the shining threads that have created the rich fabric of this state, and it is my honor to present to you Judge Matthew J. Perry, Jr.
